jay woolcott mix engineer bio biography

Way back in 1992 I borrowed a friends Tascam Porta 03. This was my first taste of recording/mixing and although I didn't know it at the time, it would subtly shape my life. Mixing for me began, as it does for many engineers, as a writing tool and a means of representing my music in a more pleasing way. As time went on I began to enjoy the mixing process more than writting and performing. This musical background and my experience of playing multiple instruments (guitar, bass, piano/keyboards and drums) has proved invaluable, you don't need to be a musician to be a good mix engineer but it does help.

A 4-track casette recorder seems a long way from Pro Tools, a host of powerful plugins and seemingly limitless production techniques made available by today's technology. Things have come a long way in 30 years, but the playing field has been levelled and professional quality post-production is no longer the preserve of commercial studios. Gone are the days when only the privileged few were afforded the opportunity to have their material mixed to a commercially acceptable standard. The industry is also recognising this fact, many engineers are leaving the large studios in favour of small mixing setups that are more cost effective but produce comparable results.

With decades of experience as a musician, educator and audio engineer, I am now available as a freelance engineer. With access to a professional tracking studio and a dedicated mixing room, I am idealy placed to work with new talent and established artists/bands alike. I greatly look forward to working with you soon.
